Bordeaux wine Region
Bordeaux, located near the Atlantic coast in southwestern France, is one of the most famous wine regions in the world. It benefits from a wide variety of soils that favour the cultivation of vines. The soil largely comprises sand, gravel, limestone, clay and silt. It is thanks to this diversity that the Bordeaux vineyards can offer a wide range of high quality wines.
The wines of the Rivers Some connoisseurs call the wines of Bordeaux ‘the wines of the rivers’, because the boundaries of the wine-growing regions here are outlined by the smooth watercolour lines of the three main rivers: the Dordogne, the Garonne and the Gironde.
Wine-growing regions
Some connoisseurs call the wines of Bordeaux ‘the wines of the rivers’, because the boundaries of the wine-growing regions here are outlined by the smooth watercolour lines of the three main rivers: the Dordogne, the Garonne and the Gironde.
On the left bank of the Garonne and the Gironde are the vineyards of Medoc, Graves and Sauternes. Between the Garonne and the Dordogne lies the wine-growing region of Entre-deux-Mers (in French, this means ‘between two seas’). On the right bank of the Dordogne, the wineries of Saint-Emilion and its subsidiaries, Pomerol, Castillon and others coexist comfortably. These are, of course, the most famous wine-growing regions of Bordeaux.
