Château de Pitray

A WORD FROM THE OWNER

Jean de
Boigne

Today, Château de Pitray is the oldest and largest family estate in Bordeaux and the biggest in the appellation of Castillon. While we own 100 hectares, only 35 are covered with vines.
Our soil enables us to produce the finest quality wines. The Pitray vineyards are located on the highest clay-limestone plateau of the Castillon-Cotes de Bordeaux appellation; this limestone adds to the fine taste of the wine, whilst the clay nourishes the vines.
Consequently, we are able to successfully produce wines which are both rich and elegant. We strive to produce wines that are dominated by the flavour of the grapes rather than the flavour of the oak cask, as we believe that the cask should complete the structure of the wine, not overpower it. Our aim is not to produce tree sap, but rather strive to achieve harmony and balance between the berries and the oak.

The 26th generation of vintners

About Château

Château de Pitray is situated in the region of Bordeaux and is the oldest family-owned vineyard of Castillon-Cotes de Bordeaux. Today, the 26th generation of vintners is engaged in the cultivation of grapes and the creation of wine.
Château de Pitray is a magical place, hidden in the depths of a plane tree alley, surrounded by vineyards, forests and meadows. Jean de Boigne, manager and heir of the Count and Countess de Boigne, is eager to tell us about his predecessors who founded this winery. For the last six centuries, Château de Pitray has been the ancestral home of the de Pitray family and has been passed down from generation to generation.
The history of the Château de Pitray began in the 15th century, when Jehan de Las Symas bought the vineyard from his neighbor from Saint-Emilion. Château de Pitray spans 100 hectares of land, including 35 hectares of vineyards; on the remaining land lies centuries-old oaks, pines and wide meadows. The king of local wines is Merlot, together with Cabernet Franc. In 2012, Jean de Boigne decided to plant a traditional, albeit slightly forgotten, type of wine in Bordeaux - Malbec. Malbec is often mistaken as Chilean, but it actually comes from the province of Coar, France, where it is called COT. We produce only red wines from the Merlot, Cabernet Franc blend. We include also Cabernet Sauvignon or Malbec in some vintages.
Since 2015, our vineyard has switched to sustainable agriculture. And today it has the High Environmental Value certification. This certification is awarded to wineries with a high level of biodiversity and very low use of inputs (fertilizer, energy, etc.).
We maintain our vineyard with great respect, only in this case it gives an amazing and authentic result.
